Common diesel generator sets can be used as common generators and emergency (standby) generators. In areas far away from large power grids, such as towns, islands, forest farms, mines, oil fields, etc., in order to supply local residents with electricity for production and life, diesel generator sets must be installed. Such generator sets should operate continuously and continuously.

    Regulations on common diesel generator sets and their capacities

    Commonly used diesel generator sets in the same power station should try to choose the same model and the same capacity, so that the same spare parts can be used for maintenance and management. For projects with large load changes, units of the same series and different capacities can also be used. The rated output voltage of the unit is generally 400V, and individual power consumption is large, and high-voltage generator sets can be used for projects with long transmission distances.

    Generally speaking, the estimation of the capacity of commonly used diesel generator sets is selected according to the long-term continuous operation output power of the set to meet the maximum calculation load of the whole project, and the capacity of the standby set should be determined according to the importance of the load. The output power of a diesel engine in continuous operation is generally 0.9 times the rated power. If the unit capacity is selected too small, it will not be able to drive all loads or cause a sudden shutdown when starting high-power loads; if the unit capacity is selected too large, the investment and maintenance costs will be high, resulting in waste of resources. Moreover, according to the characteristics of the diesel engine, when it is working under a small load for a long time, it will cause serious carbon deposits on the piston ring, fuel injection nozzle, etc. of the engine, and increase the wear of the cylinder, which will damage the unit. In addition, many factors need to be considered when estimating the capacity, including the use environment, load type and reserved margin.

    Use environment: mainly including ambient temperature, altitude and relative air humidity. When the environmental humidity and altitude are too high, the air density will decrease, and the supply of oxygen required for combustion during the operation of the unit will decrease, and the output power of the unit should be adjusted accordingly. In other words, the selected unit power is higher than the absolute value of the load power, that is, when the unit is working under non-standard conditions, the diesel engine should be power corrected.

    Load types: generally divided into linear loads such as resistive and inductive loads and non-linear loads with built-in rectifier circuits (also known as rectifier loads). Resistive loads such as light bulbs, electric stoves and ovens; inductive loads such as air conditioners, machine tools and water pumps; non-linear loads such as UPS, electronic computers, program-controlled switches and PLC equipment, etc. Among them, the characteristic of resistive load is that the resistance remains basically unchanged, and the current decreases proportionally with the voltage. With this load, the capacity of the generator set only needs to be slightly larger than the load power. But with inductive load and non-linear load, the capacity of the generator set needs to be recalculated.

    Other considerations: After calculating the capacity of the unit based on the existing load, other factors must be considered, whether it is possible to expand the load now, whether some loads may be overloaded, etc. It is recommended to appropriately increase the capacity of the unit according to your actual situation. In addition, when economic conditions permit, it is recommended to use 2 or more generator sets, some of which are used for sensitive loads (such as electronic computer systems and other electronic equipment), and some are used for insensitive loads (such as Resistive load and motor) to prevent the influence of the unit voltage waveform distortion on sensitive loads when the motor starts.

    Determination of the number of commonly used diesel generator sets

    The number of commonly used diesel generator sets is usually set to 2 or more to ensure the continuity of power supply and adapt to changes in the electrical load curve. Only when the number of units is large can the number of operating units put into the generating unit be determined according to the changes in the power load, so that the unit can be operated under economic load to reduce fuel consumption rate and power generation cost. The best economic operation of diesel generator sets is between 75% and 90% of the rated power. In order to ensure the continuity of power supply, the common diesel generator set itself should be considered to be equipped with a standby unit. When the unit is running for troubleshooting or shutdown inspection, the standby generator set can still meet the uninterrupted continuous power supply for important electrical loads.

    Control of common diesel generator sets

    Commonly used generator sets should generally be considered to be able to operate in parallel to simplify the main power distribution wiring, so that when the generator sets are started and stopped in rotation, the power supply will not be interrupted by paralleling, transferring the load, and switching the generator sets. The generator set should be equipped with the measurement and control device of the diesel generator set, and the speed control and excitation adjustment device of the set should be suitable for the requirements of parallel operation. For the backup generator set that supplies power to the important load, an automated diesel generator set should be used. When the external power supply fails, it can quickly and automatically start to restore the power supply to the important load. When the diesel engine is running, the engine room is very noisy, and the automatic unit can be easily transformed into a compartment-operated and automatically monitored generator unit. When the generator set is operating normally, the operator does not need to enter the diesel engine room, and the diesel generator set can be centrally monitored in the control room.
